A Journey Down The Madu Ganga River




This amazing river is situated off South West coast of Balapitiya, Sri Lanka. It is considered as the second biggest wetland.

It is also considered one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka.



The river also consists of 25 islands, out of which only 10 are of small landmass, and other islands are safe to visit.

The river covers almost 150 acres of land and consists of at least 14 mangroves out of the 24 mangrove species found in Sri Lanka. It is also home to 300 species of plants and about 250 wildlife species are living in and around this incredible biodiversity area. 

It is advised to accompany trained professionals or local fishermen when riding through the Madu River. The safari begins at Balapitiya. It only takes 1 to 2 hours of journey time with unforgettable life experience. 



It is able to watch prawn farming. You can catch the sites of traditional fishing methods also. You can enjoy the fish pedicure in the midst of the river. It will be a memorable experience to have a fish pedicure in a total natural environment around.



You can visit Koth Duwa during the boat ride. Koth Duwa is a large island located in Madu River. There is an ancient Buddhist Temple. An old Bo-tree, an Image house, and a Stupa are also can be found on this island. It is considered that the Sacred Tooth Relic was once enshrined on this beautiful island.
















































































. The boat traverses through thick mangrove forests, which provide protection to a large number of aquatic birds, animal and plant species. One can get a chance to see crocodiles, water snakes, tree snakes, and wild boars in their natural habitat during the boat ride.
